The Present It was at the end of the school year, and a kindergartenteacher was receiving gifts from her pupils. The florist’sson handed her a gift. She shook it, held it overhead, andsaid, “I bet I know what it is — some flowers.” “That’sright” the boy said, “but how did you know?” “Oh, just awild guess,” she said. The next pupil was the sweet shopowner’s daughter. The teacher held her gift overhead, shookit, and said, “I bet I can guess what it is — a box ofsweets.” “That’s right, but how did you know?” asked thegirl. “Oh, just a wild guess,” said the teacher. The nextgift was from the son of the liquor store owner. Theteacher held the package overhead, but it was leaking. Shetouched a drop of the leakage with her finger and touchedit to her tongue. “Is it wine?” she asked. “No” the boyreplied. The teacher repeated the process, taking a largerdrop of the leakage to her tongue. “Is it champagne?” sheasked. “No” the boy replied. The teacher took one moretaste before declaring,”I give up, what is it?” The boyreplied, “A puppy!”
